It's Never Too Late for a Fresh Start

Green Fingerprint Fresh Start

Have you ever lost touch with an old friend and thought maybe too much time had passed to reach out? Maybe you were really close at one point or another and you moved away or got busy or had a couple of kids and you just drifted apart.

It happens. And that first step can be the absolute hardest to take. Suddenly your legs feel like lead, and you have a pit in your stomach thinking about sending that text or email or making a phone call.

Life Happens

This is such a real thing for me. I grew up in Southern California, attended college in the Midwest and grad school on the east coast before moving to San Diego. Two years later, I got married and began life as a military spouse, moving in 2005, 2008, 2011, 2014, and 2015/16. We are currently spending about two years living in Europe.

I've been in a near-constant state of change since I was seventeen years old. Saying goodbye to great friends has become normal. But even if you live in the same town for ages, life can just get busy, and the thought of going back to something you've neglected can be overwhelming.

But here's the thing: are you the kind of person who would embrace that friend if they called you out of the blue? Let's say there wasn't a major falling out - just life stuff. Wouldn't it be nice to know they were thinking of you, even if years had gone by?

This blog has been silent for a year, and it wasn't an intentional break, just something that had to happen for the season. I knew the website needed a refresh, a move off of the Blogger platform, which kept me from creating new stuff. I needed something more functional, responsive (hello, mobile!), and fresh.

And I really wanted to put out high quality content for you. If you're taking a few minutes to read or visit this little corner of the internet, it should be worth your precious time.

This isn't a massive launch, just a ripping off the band-aid moment. It's been too long, friends, but it's never too late to reach out, say hello, and start anew.

Perhaps like me you've been putting something off for too long - a friendship, a goal, a project. I'm not the girl to tell you to just go for it right now (obviously!), but I will say that no matter how long it's been, it's probably not too late.

So here's my little challenge for you.

Whatever it is that's swimming around in your head - that thing you've been meaning to do but putting off for whatever reason (and for however long) - do one of three things with it:

  1. Take one step toward accomplishing it today. Just one. If you're not ready to do that then...
  2. Put a reminder on your calendar for one month from now to revisit it. If it's still on your list, then there you go. If not, then...
  3. Let it go. I'm a firm believer that the easiest way to cross something off your list is to just let it go. If it isn't necessary for your well-being or happiness, then maybe it's time to move on.

Above all, give yourself a break. Life is crazy busy and full of a million to-dos. Nobody has time for self-inflicted guilt trips, and I promise you life will still go on if you never get around to finishing that baby album.

Although if you decide you can't go another day without knocking out that baby album for your fourteen-year-old, then good on you. Go for it! It's never too late, really and truly.

I'd love to know what projects you've been putting off. Any particular reason for the delay? My list is a mile long, but I'm trying to remember that it's never too late for a fresh start.
